Dr Martin Brimmicombe BDS (Kings College) who is living in Dicky Beach, Sunshine Coast
What was your previous job in England?
After completing my studies, I worked in South west of England doing 12 months of VT and then 18 months as an associate dentist.
What made you consider coming out to Australia?
I initially came out to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa. I really just wanted a break from working in UK and planned to do 6 months travel and 6 months work.
During my Working Holiday Dentist Job Search got me work in a government clinic in Redcliff north of Brisbane for 6 months.
I also did the backpacker thing and spend three months driving right around Australia on Highway-1. We did 37,000 km in a ford falcon wagon camping and fishing as we went.
After a year I left Australia and went back to England with no intention of returning. For three years back in the UK I did a mix of not working and short locums. I was very unsettled missing the better quality of life in Australia. I got in touch with DJS in 2008 and they got me back to Australia pretty quickly.
What was your favourite part of your round-Australia trip?
My favourite part of Australia was definitely south east Queensland- which is where I am living now. I also really loved Western Australia.
Where are you living now?
I landed back into Australia in about October 2008 and headed straight to the Sunshine Coast, in south east Queensland as this was one of my favourite places on my trip three years earlier.
DJS had sorted me out with a job before I left England, so it was all pretty easy. I am still in the same job 2 and a half years later.
I live in Dicky Beach, a quiet suburb really close to the beach. I live a two minute walk from what is, even by Australian standards, a world class beach. It is a very relaxed suburb of a medium sized city called Caloundra. 50 minutes drive from world-famous Noosa.
What are your working hours like?
I work a conventional Monday and Tuesday - 9 to 5 ish. Wednesday and Friday I work 6am-2pm (which I thought I would hate, but am finding very pleasant) and Thursdays I do 8-1pm.
How does this compare to your previous job in the UK?
The problem with dentistry in the UK is that it's a rush if you want to earn a good living. It can be very stressful. In Australia, you can take the time to concentrate on doing the best you can do. In the UK you just don't get that opportunity.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like to fish. Often you can catch some decent sized Mangrove Jack (close to 3kgs), flathead and anything else. It is a fisherman's paradise.
I also play a lot of golf. The climate and the golf courses were probably a big factor in living here. It is also a golfer's paradise.
What are your plans?
Just recently applied for residency, so once I get that, I will start to think about my long term plans. I am really happy where I live and work currently that's for sure.
